History of Balatonakali
Balatonakali as many other coastal settlements is inhabited from the prehistoric times. The lake is rich in fish, the climate is pleasant, these conditions are favorable for the actual settlers.
Excavations have uncovered evidence of objects proving the fact that Celts and Romans lived here for centuries.
The Mediterranean climate is favorable to the vine. The lake, the beach and the forest belt is favorable for hunting and fishing.
The population started to grow in the age of the The Árpád kings. King Saint Stephen consigned the guarding of the Holy Crown to the clerical curators of Székesfehérvár these people have received large estates for the services. Among these estates was also Akali. During the last thousand years this land was in the hands of 44 curators. Sometimes it had been rented out or just simply was not taken care.
Akali belonged to union of five parts of Dörgicse. King Andrew the first mentions "Dergeche" in the foundation letter of Tihany in 1055.
In 1333 is it mentioned as "Hukuli Degethe" already in the list of the clerical documents. In the XIV-XVI. century it is mentioned as a serf village.
Akali slipped up from the area of Dörgicse in 1531.
The Turkish army, however, destroyed the settlement completely, Akali was uninhabited for 200 years.
The re-settlement was organized by the church starting in the 18th century. King Frank the first donated the village to the Piarists in
1807. The land had being belonged to the Piarists up to the end of the World War the second.
The village is built on a narrow strip of Lake Balaton right at the beach. North along the low hills there are fancy vineyards, in the higher points there are oak woods.
The former one-street fishing village is developed to a holiday center. The number of the permanent residents is 700. In the summertime, however, the population grows to 20000.
Maintained beach, boardwalk, harbor, 3 international camps, summer cultural events (Summer Festival in the first half of August), possibility of fishing and water sports serve the pleasant leisure. The local cuisine and famous vineries await the visitors.
